Slack integration
Joltuar can join your Slack workspace as a bot you @mention in a channel or message directly — it answers questions about your team's meetings and your Brain (playbooks/knowledge) using the same AI that powers the in-app Assistant, without anyone leaving Slack.
What it does
Once connected, teammates can:
- @mention the bot in a channel it's a member of — "@Joltuar what did we agree with Acme last week?" — and get an answer in a thread.
- Message the bot directly for the same thing, without needing a channel or a thread.
- Ask follow-up questions in the same thread or DM — the bot remembers the recent exchange, so "and the action items?" still knows which call you mean.
The bot is read-only. It can search and summarize your meetings and Brain content; it cannot create, edit or delete anything in Joltuar, and it never has access to a different workspace's data than the one it's connected to.
Who can connect
Only a Joltuar workspace owner or admin can connect or disconnect Slack — installing the bot is an organization-level action.
Prerequisites
- Permission to install apps into your Slack workspace (your Slack workspace's own app-approval policy applies — some Slack workspaces require a Slack admin to approve new app installs).
- A Joltuar workspace you're signed into, with the owner/admin role.
Connect Slack
- In Joltuar, open your account menu (bottom of the sidebar) and choose Integrations.
- Find the Slack card and click Connect. This opens a new browser tab.
- Slack asks you to choose a workspace (if you belong to more than one) and shows the permissions Joltuar is requesting. Click Allow.
- Slack redirects to a "Slack connected" confirmation page; you can close that tab.
- Back in Joltuar, the Slack card now shows your Slack workspace's name instead of the description text.
- In Slack, invite the bot to any channel where you want it to answer: type
/invite @Joltuarin that channel. No invite is needed to message it directly — open its entry under Apps in Slack's sidebar and send a DM, and none is needed for a workflow or the Assistant to post to a public channel either.
Approve it as yourself. Whoever clicks Allow in Slack must be a member of your Joltuar workspace, with the same e-mail in Slack as in Joltuar. If someone else approves it, Slack shows "You approved Joltuar in Slack as … which isn't a member" and nothing is connected — this stops an install link from being used to connect a Slack workspace that isn't yours.
One Slack workspace, one Joltuar workspace. A Slack workspace can be connected to only one Joltuar workspace at a time. If it is already connected to a different one, Slack shows "already connected to a different Joltuar workspace" and nothing changes — an owner or admin of that other Joltuar workspace has to disconnect Slack first, or a Slack admin can remove the Joltuar app from your Slack workspace. Connecting a different Slack workspace from the same Joltuar workspace replaces the previous connection.
What data flows, and in which direction
Slack → Joltuar: the text of your question, enough of the surrounding thread or DM history to keep the conversation coherent, your Slack profile e-mail (to identify you) and your Slack-reported timezone (so "what's today" resolves to the right day for you).
Joltuar → Slack: the generated answer, posted back into the same thread (for a channel mention) or the same DM. In addition, a Joltuar user can ask the Joltuar assistant — or set up a workflow — to post a message (for example a meeting summary) to any public channel, or to a private channel the bot has been invited to. The assistant always shows the exact message and channel and asks for confirmation before posting; a workflow posts only after its plan, including that step, has been approved.
Whose data the bot can see: the bot answers as the person who asked — your Slack e-mail is matched against Joltuar workspace members, and you only ever get access to what your own Joltuar account can already see (your organization's meetings recorded through the web app, browser extension or desktop app, and your Brain). If your Slack e-mail doesn't match a Joltuar account in the connected workspace, the bot replies:
"Your Slack email (
you@company.com) isn't a member of the connected Joltuar workspace. Sign in to Joltuar with that email, or ask an admin to invite you."
— and never shows any data.
Permissions we request and why
| Scope | What it's for |
|---|---|
app_mentions:read | See when someone @mentions the bot. |
chat:write | Post the bot's answers (and its "thinking…" status while it works). |
chat:write.public | Post a message a workflow or the Assistant sends to a public channel, without inviting the bot to that channel first. |
channels:history / groups:history | Read the thread you mentioned the bot in, in public and private channels it's a member of, so follow-up questions keep context. |
im:history / mpim:history | Read recent direct-message history so a DM conversation also keeps context. |
im:read / im:write | Open and manage the DM conversation with the bot. |
users:read | Read basic Slack profile info for the person asking. |
users:read.email | Read the asker's e-mail address, used to match them to a Joltuar account. |
team:read | Identify which Slack workspace is connected. |
channels:read / groups:read | List channels the bot is a member of (needed to operate correctly in both public and private channels). |
The bot posts only as itself (chat:write, im:write) — none of the scopes above let it post as you, change your Slack settings, or read messages in channels it hasn't been invited into.
Disconnect
From Joltuar: Integrations → Slack → Disconnect (workspace owner/admin only). The bot stops answering immediately, and Joltuar deletes the stored connection. The Joltuar app entry still exists in your Slack workspace until you also remove it from Slack's side.
From Slack: open Slack → Apps → Joltuar → Remove App. This removes it fully from your Slack workspace and disconnects it in Joltuar too — the Slack card goes back to Connect. (Also do this if you want the app gone from Slack after disconnecting in Joltuar.)
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | What's happening | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The Slack card isn't on the Integrations screen | Your workspace may not have this integration turned on yet | Contact support@joltuar.app |
| The bot doesn't respond at all in a channel | It hasn't been invited to that channel | Run /invite @Joltuar in that channel |
| The bot doesn't respond to a DM | Rare — the install may be missing a permission | Contact support@joltuar.app |
| "Your Slack email isn't a member of the connected Joltuar workspace" | Your Slack e-mail and your Joltuar account e-mail don't match | Sign in to Joltuar with that same e-mail, or ask your Joltuar admin to invite it |
| The message stays on "Thinking…" | The backend restarted mid-answer | Ask again |
| "That took too long to answer" | The question needed more time than the response window allows | Ask a narrower question |
| Follow-up questions in the same thread ignore earlier context | The Slack app was installed before thread-history permissions were added | Disconnect and reconnect Slack from the Integrations screen |
| The Slack card says "Reconnect Slack to grant Joltuar the new permission…" | Slack was connected before Joltuar asked for a newer permission — Slack never adds one to an existing connection | An owner or admin clicks Reconnect on the card and approves again in Slack |
| A workflow or the Assistant says "Joltuar is not a member of #channel" | The channel is private, or Slack was connected before posting to public channels was allowed | For a private channel, run /invite @Joltuar in it; otherwise reconnect Slack from the Integrations screen |
| "Slack cannot find this channel" | The channel was deleted, or it is private and the bot was never invited | Invite the bot (/invite @Joltuar), or pick another channel |
| The bot answers twice | Rare backend condition; harmless | No action needed |
| "You approved Joltuar in Slack as … which isn't a member" after Allow | The Slack account that approved the app uses an e-mail that isn't in your Joltuar workspace | Connect again while signed in to Slack with your Joltuar e-mail, or ask an admin to invite that e-mail |
| "…is already connected to a different Joltuar workspace" after Allow | That Slack workspace is connected to another Joltuar workspace | Ask an owner/admin there to disconnect Slack, or have a Slack admin remove the Joltuar app, then connect again |
